The Math Lab is on the first floor, north wing of the TMCB, room 159. It can be reached from the northernmost doors of the building or by entering the east doors and going down the first hallway on the right. Call (801) 422-4695 for more info.

Independent Study

The Math Lab is the perfect place to get help on Independent Study courses in Math 97, 110, 112, 113, 119, 313, and 334.

 

The Math Lab provides many opportunities to get the help you need when you need it. A tutor is assigned to help with Independent Study questions every hour the Math Lab is open (see above for hours). There are several means to get in contact with one of these tutors.

 

By phone: You can reach the secretaries in the Math Lab at 801-422-4695. They will quickly get you in contact with the tutor on duty.

 

By email: You can reach us at mathlabhelpatgmail [dot] com.

 

Come in person: The Math Lab is located in the north wing of the TMCB, in room 159. Feel free to come in whenever you have a question. Just talk to one of the secretaries in the back corner.

Employment

The BYU Math Lab employs over 50 skilled undergraduates as tutors in upper- and lower-division courses. Applicants should have completed Math 113 or the equivalent and be prepared to take a skills examination to qualify. Three letters of recommendation (at least one from a mathematics instructor) are also required. Job descriptions, an online and print application, and recommendations forms are below.

Math Lab Tutor

Requirements:

  1. Lower division tutors: Proficiency in algebra, trigonometry, and differential and integral calculus. This includes course material in Math 110, 111, 112, 113, 116, and 118.  Skills are assesed by two seperate exams proctored by the Math Lab secretaries.  The first test covers Algebra and Trigonometry.  The second test covers Calculus and Analysis.
  2. Upper division tutors: Proficiency in basic proofs, multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and ordinary differential equations. This includes material from Math 290, 313, 314, and 334.  Skills are assesed by both lower division exams (described above) and an upper division exam proctored by the Math Lab secretaries.
  3. Ability to thoroughly explain both familiar and new or difficult concepts to students in understandable ways. (No "it is intuitively obvious" or "by inspection".)
  4. Flexible schedule, preferably with availability in peak hour in afternoon and evening shifts.
  5. Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which is from a previous mathematics instructor.

The tests may be taken anytime during normal Math Lab hours.  Allow about two hours for each exam.

 

Responsibilities:

  1. Assist students in the Math Lab in understanding mathematics by answering questions and explaining concepts.
  2. Attend weekly training meetings to maintain teaching and concept-based skills.
  3. Represent the Math Lab in a manner consistent with the Goals of a BYU Education and the BYU Honor Code.
  4. Teach Math Lab-hosted review sessions for selected 100- or 300-level classes.
