Purpose
The Brigham Young University (BYU) Summer Mathematics Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) is an exciting eight-week program with the following goals:
- Provide undergraduate students with the opportunity to experience doing mathematical research
- Encourage undergraduate students, especially female students and students from institutions with limited research opportunities, to attend graduate school in mathematics
- Prepare participants to be successful in graduate school
We provide participants with skills that will help them in their research and in graduate school. To do this, we offer training sessions in computers, seminars on needed research skills, and discussions on graduate school. Topics for discussion about graduate school include the following:
- "Common misconceptions about graduate school in mathematics"
- "What you should do now to prepare for graduate school"
- "Math organizations that graduate students should be aware of"
- "Attending conferences, giving presentations, and publishing research"
We have some social and recreational activities that will foster interaction and collaboration in a relaxing environment. These could include local hikes in the mountains and to a waterfall, and a whitewater rafting trip.
This program is funded by the National Science Foundation
(Award #: DMS - 0453421) and Brigham Young University.
