Tropical Geometry and Algebra Group

People

The tropical group is no longer active at BYU. Former members of the tropical algebra group include

  • Gretchen Rimmasch
  • Darryl Wade
  • Natalie Wilde Bergin
  • Mark Kempton
  • Ryan Coatney
  • Julian Tay
  • Nathan Grigg
  • Amanda Ellis Francis
  • Aaron Hill
Our faculty advisor was Professor Tyler Jarvis, and we also got help from Professor W.E. Lang.

Research

We worked on a number of problems in tropical geometry and algebra, including:

For more details and current results, see the research page.

We have presented our research in a number of places, including the following:

  • BYU College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences' Spring Research Conference.
  • MAA Intermountain Section Meetings
  • Young Mathematicians' Conference (Ohio State University)
  • AMS/MAA/SIAM Annual Joint Meetings

Maple Code

Nathan Grigg has developed a Maple package for tropical mathematics that can graph, analyze, and otherwise manipulate tropical polynomials. It is a useful tool for anyone wanting to explore tropical geometry and algebra. For more information, or to download a current version of the code, see the maple page.

Resources

For those who are just beginning their study of tropical mathematics, the paper Tropical Mathematics by Speyer and Strumfels, along with this movie of an introductory talk by B. Sturmfels on tropical geometry will be most helpful.
