Course Description

Math 290 is an introduction to mathematical thinking. The emphasis in this course is on reasoning mathematically. We will learn many different proof techniques, as well as how to write mathematics. By the end of the course, students should be able to read, understand and write mathematical proofs. Because writing is an important part of the course, we will learn to use the TeX typesetting system. After the second week of class, you will be required to type at least one homework per week using TeX.

Additional Book Chapters

Note that the authors have written three additional chapters for the book. Chapter 14 covers proofs in ring theory. Chapters 13 and 14 together constitute a good introduction to Math 371. Chapter 15 deals with proofs in linear algebra, overlapping significantly with Math 343. Chapter 16 deals with topology, and overlaps the material taught in Math 451 or Math 553.

Turning in homework electronically

I have created a gmail account for the class to turn in homework. The e-mail address is Math290@gmail.com. When you send your homework, send both a TeX file and a PDF file. Note that homework is normally due at 5:00 PM on the due date, but for homework turned in electronically, the due date is extended to midnight. Shortly after the due date, typed solutions to the homework will be made available on the Homework web page.
