The department has approximately 30-40 graduate students providing a low student/professor ratio. Our programs are recognized for their quality and personal attention to graduate students.

The mathematics department offers both a masters (MS) degree and a doctoral (PhD) degree. The master of science degree is designed to prepare students for positions in business and industry. It also provides preparation for further graduate study leading to a doctoral degree. The doctoral program prepares students for a career in research and teaching at the university level or in research in a non-academic setting.

The department has a top master’s program, placing students consistently in top 25 Ph.D. programs in mathematics, research labs, and jobs in industry. PhD students have gone onto jobs in academia, NSA, and industry.

Also, BYU is seventh among all undergraduate institutions for the number of alumni who successfully complete a PhD in Mathematics or Statistics.
