Math Camp

AN EVENT FOR STUDENTS WHO DEMONSTRATE HIGH ACHIEVEMENT AND MOTIVATION IN MATHEMATICS.

Overview:

Five-day camp for middle school students and high school students. The students have a lot of fun doing math from 9-3 each day for a week. Math camp is run by Dr. Nathan Priddis, and classes will be taught by BYU faculty and students. We will be located at the Talmage building the entire time except for when we go to lunch. There is a specific topic/theme for the camps that has not been decided on yet. Students will receive some snacks in between activities, and then go to a buffet lunch at the Cannon Center every day (included with their meal cards).

Check- in:

Monday, June 17, 8:30-9:00 AM in the Talmage Building (TMCB) lobby. When parents check in, they will be required to sign a release agreement before their student may participate in the camp. Part of that agreement requires that all participants adhere to the CES Honor Code and BYU’s Dress and Grooming Standards. We will also send an electronic copy a week or two before the camp starts.

  • If they plan to send their student to Math Camp on the first day with someone else, they will need to fill out a Minor Participant Agreement before Monday and send a signed copy back to Julia Wilkes via email.

Schedule:

We will meet every morning during the week of June 17-21 at 9 AM, and we will finish each day at 3PM. Student will need to be picked up by 3 PM. In order to ensure their safety, parents must be present to pick up their students, or have given permission to another adult to do so, or told us ahead of time that they will be walking/biking home if they live close to campus.

Materials:

We will provide pencils, paper, and the use of computers, when needed. If the student has a favorite pencil or would like to use other paper, they can bring that. For the Senior Math camp, we will be guiding students through writing a computer program that will encrypt messages. If your student does not have a Google account or some other reliable email service, where he or she can save the program, they may also want to send a USB drive or other device for saving his or her work.

Lunch:

We will go to a buffet lunch each day at 11:00 in the Cannon Center on campus. At check-in each participant will receive a lunch card on a lanyard, which should be brought each day of Math Camp. If the student has any dietary restrictions, they can look at the menu for Cannon Center each day here. Often, the menu items can be modified to accommodate various restrictions.
